Rome, Capital of Italy
Rome (Italian: Roma [Roma] (listen)) is a city and a special municipality (called "Roma Capitale") of Italy. It is the capital of the country of the province and also of the Lazio region. With 2.7 million inhabitants in 1285.3 square kilometers of area, it is also the largest Italian city and the fourth most populous city in the European Union.
The urban area of Rome extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of about 3.8 million.1 Between 3.2 and 4.2 million people live in the metropolitan area of the capital italiana.The city is located in the central-western portion of the Italian peninsula, cut off by the Tiber River within the Lazio. Since the first century, the city is the seat of the papacy and in the eighth century the city became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy and in 1946 the Italian Republic .After the Middle Ages, Rome was ruled by popes Alexander VI and Leo X, who transformed the city into one of the main centers of the Italian Renaissance,
along with Florença. The current version of St Peter's Basilica was built and the Sistine Chapel was painted by Michelangelo. Famous artists and architects, such as Bramante, Bernini and Raphael resided for some time in Rome, contributing to its Renaissance and Baroque architecture.Rome is considered a city global. In 2007, Rome was the 11th most visited city in the world, the third most visited of the European Union and the most popular tourist attraction in Itália. The city has one of the best "brands" of Europe, both in reputation and in patrimônio.12 Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Mundial.
Monuments and museums such as the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum are amongst the most visited tourist destinations in the world, and both locations receive million tourists a year. Rome also hosted the Summer Olympics in 1960.
